Arcologies

Coined by architect Paolo Soleri, the term "arcology" combines the words "architecture" and "ecology", and implies an effective combination of the two. Similar to the Old Man River city concept, arcologies have been proposed to solve the problems of large human population densities in limited geographical areas.

The concept of arcology is to not just build cities that sprawl outward along the planet’s surface, but to more efficiently use space and reduce a city’s footprint, both physically and ecologically (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcology). This would then allow the preservation of surrounding natural areas for ecological, aesthetic and recreational purposes.
