Bird-Friendly Glass Windows

Professor Daniel Klem, at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, says that birds don’t see windows and that at least 1 billion are killed by flying into them every year in the United States! (This is from a segment by John Nielsen on National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition”, Jan. 3, 2006.) Along with Carr Everbach, from Swarthmore College’s engineering faculty, he implemented the use of special “fritted” glass in a new building on Swarthmore’s campus. It has rows of circles etched into the glass, which hopefully make it more visible to birds while still allowing humans to look out through it.
